BRADLEY BEACH BOOKS March 2010 JWH
August 1958-January 2009
Thank you, faithful readerWelcome to 2010 at Bradley Beach Books! With the start of a new decade, we approach our tenth anniversary. (Due to internal changes at our ordering partner, the venerable Tattered Cover Book Store, only our new links are working at this time.)
The percentage of revenue received from these sales supports the work of this site. If you are one of our regular readers, please be generous in your assistance of this independent publication.
Both new and long-time readers know Bradley Beach Books as an advertising-free source of reviews of quality children's literature and some adult nonfiction titles. As many smaller bookstores have closed and book-review space in major publications has been greatly reduced or has become unavailable, lesser-known books and authors have fewer resources with which to connect with readers. And in the nine years since this review was started, Internet content, too, has become more commercialized (and public discussion in all media has often assumed a polarized tone). As your editor, Elisabeth B., I can sift through this material and provide a high-quality selection of titles that I'm confident my readers will enjoy. I have spent many years as a professional writer and book editor, and I want to share some of my favorite selections with you. (And every review you'll read here was written by me; nothing is lifted from publishers' promotional copy.)
The children's titles are evaluated not only for the creativity of the writing, but also for the overall quality of the artwork, typography, and design (and many of these books are gorgeous). My tastes tend toward the classic; nonviolence is also an important value, and the titles for younger readers have been chosen with this in mind. In general, titles that have already sold huge numbers of copies elsewhere, and instructional material, will not be featured here. I want to let you know about the work of many outstanding authors and illustrators who may not receive as much publicity.
Happy reading!
